Eastern Water Dragon

Physignathus lessurii

To find out about our common bushland character, we caught up with the Eastern Water Dragon.

Where do you live?

My friends and I are a common sight along creeks and wetland areas, sunning ourselves on rocks or trees as we are semi-aquatic arboreal lizards.

Where do you dine?

Anywhere a good variety of insects, fruits and berries, aquatic organisms and small terrestrial vertebrates are served.

What are some interesting features about your species?

  • We have a bright red belly upon maturity
  • We produce up to 20 parchment shelled eggs, which are laid in a burrow.
  • We can drop into the water if disturbed and can stay submerged for a long time.

Distribution:

East coast of Australia from Cape York to Victoria.

You can get a free Green Cleaning Guide from the Manly Environment Centre.
